2003 TL type S - Are Tranny Issues Guaranteed?
I am looking at a very well kept 2003 TL type S with 100k miles. Is it guaranteed to have tranny issues or is that just some? What should I look for when test driving?
Thank you!
Thank you!

There's a reason this is one of the biggest threads on AZ: https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1...n-swap-905115/
Hope for the best, plan for the worst: worst being that you have a BAYA trans handy for replacement once the glass OE one fails.

Well, that's not the right question. All mechanical things will eventually fail with enough use. Proper servicing and maintenance will extend that use.
You question is more like, "what kind of service life can I expect from this transmission before it develops symptoms requiring replacement"?
That depends. How "well kept" is it? Do they have maintenance records? Have you checked Carfax? Do you know the sellers?
Are you going to have a shop do a prepurchase inspection or are you just gonna "kick the tires"?

I would have to test drive it first to know how it feels but from the looks of it, it was very well taken care of. Low mileage. Even the wheels are scuff free. I probably won't have a mechanic look at it. But sure, what kind of service life should be expected if it was well maintained? Is there something to look for when testing the transmission? I know how to check the front subframe issue and for fluid leaks. My dad has a 2001 CL so I am familiar with them a bit, but he has zero transmission issues with his.

my transmission indicators
I had a 2002 TL-S that was very well maintained and had just over 100K miles too. I donated it last year as it was having transmission issues, but it still ran. For me, it twice happened when I pressed on the gas to start moving, the revs went up, but the car did not move. Very frighting as that could easily gotten me into an accident. Also, when in 3rd gear, the car would chirp and vibrate. I had all the work done by an Acura dealer. Took it in when dash light came on and the mechanic said it indicated a transmission problem. Didn't get work done on it, but mechanic reset the error light. Shortly after that, the dash light came back on again. I loved that car for 22 years and very sad to see it go. Good luck with your car if you decide to get it.

That's so sad that you had to just donate the car It sounds like it would have been a great candidate for an AV6 swap and would have gotten you 200K more miles of life.

I did end up buying the car as it was in amazing condition. The tranny shifts fine. I changed the tranny fluid/filter anyway and checked all 4 solenoid filters and they were clean. Hoping for a long life but will do a swap if needed.
