How TO: Change/ Flush coolant?? Transmission fluid?
 

I thought ive seen these here before but they seemed to of disappeared?? I need to know how to change the coolant in my 04 (37k miles all muddy looking) :( and the transmission fluid.. as well i have an AUTO.. any help/pictures is much appreciated as i need to do it asap!

Damn you at 37K and its muddy looking?!! I'm at 61K on an 06 Wonder what mine looks like.

For some reason, cant find the thread for it. Buts basically what you do is drain (removes 3 quarts), go for a drive cycling through all gears. Come back, drain and refill again. Then go for another drive cycling through all gears. Come back, Drain and refill again, then go for one more drive cycling through all gears. Come back, and drain and refill again. You have changed out 9 quarts and are good to go....

that transmission sounds a little iffy im not too crazy about driving it with 3 quarts of fluid out.. unless im misunderstanding.. ya im not sure about my coolant being muddy.. i suppose its because its an 04 and its sat for so long who knows kind of irritating tho..
so our tranny is 9 quarts?? and theres not a way to drain the entire thing and refill? any more insight into the tranny fluid flush/change thanx for the coolant!

lol im guessing i drain 3 quarts (is that all that comes out??) refill drive etc.. i think i got that part.. but i dont want to have to measure or overfill/underfill when im done.. Also any pix of where the drain bolt is? anymore info im trying to go to acura in a minute to buy 9 quarts???

underneath the car on the driver's side, there is a plastic shield that you will have to unbolt kinda underneath the tranny bolt in the engine bay. then, there is an area with 2 or 3 bolts and the tranny drain bolt is the weird one. u don't use a wrench with a socket attached to it, u just use the wrench with no socket. u actually put the wrench w/no socket into the drain bolt...it is the bolt with the hole in the middle that is 4 sided if that makes any sense. when u take off the cover u'll see what i mean. there's no other bolt like this in the area so u won't get it wrong.

just use the tranny fluid dipstick to see how much it needs.

What I do is pull the lower rad hose after removing the rad cap, and let the coolant flow out quickly, taking any sediment with it, then refill the system WITH THE SAME TYPE COOLANT and distilled water.
Flush out the coolant recover tank as well.

Mixing coolants can cause VERY bad things to happen.

For auto transmissions, I drain the pan and refill.
You can do that once a year, every year, or more often if it looks like it needs it.


I dont often do anything with the filters, which are often just a fine screen, some transmissions have magnets in the pan to catch and hold metal, they dont need to be cleaned often.
Keeping the fluid in good shape is the best thing you can do for any auto transmission, and I like using the original fluid, as many transmissions are designed for that fluid, and things like viscosity and lubrication qualities will change how a trans shifts.
Long gone are the days of the generic 3 speed auto trans that used generic atf.

so I do the tranny with 9 quarts?? Any more insight to the granny fluid change?? Wanna get that done today

I think you drain about 3 quarts out the pan, and would refill with the same amount.
Buy 4 or 5 or 6 quarts, whatever drains out put the same amount back in, save the leftover new stuff for the next time...

Most pans hold about 3 quarts, but it depends on design, and how long the car sits before draining.

Be sure to check the level per acura recomendations, which if like other cars is with hot fluid after a drive.
(I got no clue, I have the 6 speed manual!)

do a 3x3 drain and refill. yes, u have to drain and refill it 3 times. after each drain drive around the block and make sure to drive in reverse for a short distance so that the new fluid goes through all of the gears. check the fluid level with the tranny dipstick after each refill. that's pretty much it.

Defintely going to get on this too...I'm trying to tackle ALL major preemptive maintenance on this car to keep it from having expensive repairs down the line.
