B12 Service?
 

Hi,

It has been a while since I have been on this site. Too busy with work.

But here is my question.

What is done in a B12 Service?
My local Acura dealer wants $230 to perform the service.

If I do the work myself, how do I reset the service indicator?

if the service due lmessage is already being displayed, i believe you hold down the sel/reset button for 10 seconds, then it will ask a question and then you hit the sel/reset button again...

If it was a reasonable cost, say, $120 ($30 Oil & Filter; $30 Rotation; $30 Air Filter; $30 Cabin Filter), I could see that. Especially if you're not into DIY.

i got quoted for $180 at curry acura in scarsdale, ny.....im supposed to drop my car off monday.

i just paid about $120-130 for mine, but that was without the filters. it was worth it to me for the convenience, but anything much over that would be a little much.

About 20 years ago, when we bought our first house, I figured that doing the income tax return would be "too complicated". So I went to H&R Block. I watched what they did and then had to pay them $50. I said to myself, "NEVER again. $50 for THAT?!?!".

After hanging around here for 6 or 8 months, it's obvious some of these car services are the same way "$230?!?!? for THAT?!?!".

Oil, Filter and Rotation $50 - $60 max at the Honda/Acura/Chain/Indie shop of your choice. I can see where DIY on the Oil and Rotation can be difficult - tools, space, disposal, etc.

But the engine air filter? It's, what, a $20 part and ~3 minutes of time?

The cabin air filter is about the same cost and bit harder because of the access, but I did it on our 2002 in ~30 minutes, saved ~$60 and didn't even have to go get stitches. Can't beat that with a stick.

Bah, if you're rich enough to buy a $30,000 car, you're probably rich enough to pay double-triple for service. That's very likely what the majority of TL owners do. You can do most of the service yourself for the cost of the parts and your time.

like everyone else said, do it ur self. you will save money (more mods), nice feelin on working and becoming familiar w/ the ride ..IMHO

Oh, I WILL be doing it myself. I can't see paying that much for the work they are doing.
While I was still in college I did engine/transmission/differential work myself. I actually did a full update of an RX-7 from '83 to '85. Stripped it down to the frame and rebuilt everything in a week. I knew every nook and cranny and wiring route of that car after that. I loved that car.
Although I can afford to pay for the work to be done at the dealer, I would rather save the cash and put it into something else.

@dave - Plus you'll exercise more caution than any Acura tech would since it's your car. You wouldn't believe the kind of shit I've seen happen at dealerships and shops over the years.

I called my dealer last time about the B12 service and they ask how many miles i have on it. I said almost 30k and they said they have a 30k miles service for $399. I did make an appointment but change it the next day to just a oil change ( I get it for Free). So i bought the 2 filters after i left and went to my regular place when i had my mustang to get my tire roation.

I think B12 also said to check the drive belt...which i didnt do..should be okay..lol

I recently got a B12. From what it seems is it is a simple oil change and tire rotation.

My question is, will it impact my factory warranty if I get it done at Firestone or someplace similar ?

keep your receipts, it shouldn't impact your warranty. I do it all myself and fill out the log book.

A B12 is NOT a simple oil change and tire rotation. Cabin and Air filters are also replaced... You can get this done anywhere without impacting the warranty.

I have a notice from Acura saying I'm soon due for a B service.
It's 220CAD.

Pulled from the CL forum as I'm too lazy to type it all out from what I remember seeing on the service-bulletin-board at the stealership.


Replace engine oil and filter
Inspect and top off all fluid levels (windshield washer, battery, brake, transmission, coolant, power steering, and hydraulic clutch).
Set tire pressure to factory specs
Rotate tires
Inspect front brakes, pads, discs and calipers
Inspect brake hoses and lines for cracks or leaks
Inspect adjustment of parking brake
Inspect suspension-mounting bolts
Inspect condition of exhaust pipes and muffler
Inspect power steering system
Inspect steering operation, tie rod and ends, steering rack and boots
Inspect all drive belts
Lube all hinges and latches
Inspect and replace air filter if necessary
Inspect air conditioning system for efficiency
Inspect battery connections
Inspect all hose clamps and coolant system
Inspect all lights and accessories

I might just go ahead and bring it in... just for the convenience.
There are some issues I know that I have with my TL..
Such as battery issue [although it's been good to me lately].
Light issue with the 'lo' setting for seat warmer.
Need new air/cabin filters.
A/C tends to smell.
E-Brake is not working at 100% [sometimes rolls back/forward even after 8 clicks].

Those 12A's were great little engines, unless it became a GSL-SE with the 13B.

I just had my B12 service (Niello Acura - Sacramento) on my 08 TL. I did not have them change the air filter because they I wanted to replace it with a K&N (for only a $5 more than the $35 they wanted for the OEM). Also, I didn't have them rotate the tires because I have a local tire store do my rotations and balancing. The total cost came out to $130. If I wasn't going on a road-trip right away I would have researched acurazine and changed the cabin air filter myself. That would have probably cut the cost in half.

I got an offer from a dealershir for B1 service for $59.95. I thought this was pretty reasonable.

I did change the air filter and engine filter 2000 miles ago. Now my mileage is around 30K.

My question is other than B1 service, I see people reccomending transmission fluid change. But, if I read the manual, it says that it needs to be replaced at 60K for the first time. Why change at 30K?

Also, the manual says brake fluid needs to be changed every 3 years regardless of mileage? Mine is a 2006. Should I change brake fluid to?

Yes. A good bleed and fluid change will definitely improve your brake response.

The cabin air filter is 1/2 hour labor I believe. So 1/2 hr @ $120/hr plus $40 for the filter is $100. Engine Air filter is around $30, depending on the dealer.

A minor service (B1), which consists of an oil change, tire rotation and inspection, costs around between $100 to $150.

So, $230 doesn't sound out-of-line to me.

How do you cahnge the cabin air filter?

This is a pretty easy DIY it would seem. Especially with the Disc. Tires of the world, doing free rotations. Then all you have is the oil change, air filter, and cabin filter, not too hard, IMHO. $230! :spanky:Dealer or not, its a rip-off, IMO.

My 30K service was free...

Bridgewater Acura (NJ) wanted to charge me $465. I laughed at him.

i have an 09 TSX, from the boston area... Herb Connolly Motors on Rte.9 in Framingham just quoted me $435....

The Neighborhood Wrench specializes in Honda and Acura, in Natick... quoted me $175...

I have a '08 TL, I was just quotes $451 in Portland Or. Looking for a Honda/ Acura place to price compare, Thanks to this forum for pointing me to a local chop versus the Stealerships.

I just called Ron Tonkin Acura today to ask about when they would have time to get mine into the shop for the B12. Along with that my passenger seat heater is not functioning and the VSA message has been on since I purchased the car.

Now I need to call the extended warranty people to see what they will cover :)

B12 for $451.00???

My next call after the warranty people will be back to Acura to see what the charge is for the B12 service.

Yeah, $230? That's too much for me for some works like these.

Maybe they include the cost of checking + fixing the seat heater? If not, this is even double worse than $230.

My questioning the $451 was from another poster previous to mine.

I just got off the phone with the warranty people. They will cover the VSA repairs, but the seat heater they will not replace. If it's a switch or chaffed wiring it is covered.

As for the B12, it's B1 and B2 according to them. It's the oil and oil filter change, tire rotation and cabin air filter for $80.95 at Ron Tonkin Acura. I could get the tires rotated for free at American Tire where I purchased them if I thought it would be worth the time (not).

They can take the car next week and will have a loaner car for me.

Ridiculous Pricing from the Ray Laks dealerships here in Buffalo NY.

Both the Acura and Honda Dealerships have the same price for this service.

Total came to $375.00 for the B12 service.

(blew my mind that the Honda dealership couldn't give a better deal than this).

259 was for the oil change / tire rotation

116 was for the cabin filters and etc.

ridiculous.. (but I guess they can charge whatever they want when they're the only Acura Dealership in Buffalo).

That's a very unreasonable price compared to here in Portland, Oregon. I'm amazed that the charge is so varied from west coast to east coast and dealership to dealership.

I have to admit, I haven't PAID for the service yet ;) Maybe there is something I'm missing from my phone call.

SmileyOR, I spoke with Dick Hannah and they quoted 451. I think I'll try Tonkin to see if I can get the B12 for under $100 as you mentioned. If that's true then this great Zine has come thru once again!

Post back what your answer is. I'm curious about any miscommunication. When I told them I had a code come up on my MFD that said B12, I read it as B twelve. They said it was a B one and B two which was oil change, oil filter change and cabin filter change as well as rotating the tires and inspections of the undercarriage, brakes etc.

I did tell them my mileage at the time was 86k so it should be clear ;)

^also does it not include engine air filter change?(i was told all of what you said + engine air filter)

My TLS is in the shop today (Ron Tonkin Acura, Portland, OR).

Same report as to charges for oil change and oil filter change. Cabin filter was a look and see item. If changed that is ~$30.00.

I have a 2011 MDX for a loaner. Sure rides soft compare to my TLS :D

OK, received the call back.

Cabin filter they don't look at. If you have a history at their shop they will change according to mileage for about $100.00 for parts and labor.

Engine oil and filter change plus the inspection was $45.00.

Passenger seat heating element would be $474.00 for parts and labor.

Front brake pads are in need of replacement and would cost (for Brembo's) $405 for pads and labor. I didn't ask whether this included turning the rotors.

So now for some brake shoes. Anyone in Portland have any recommendations?
