PS Pulley Removal
 

I was attempting to remove my power steering pulley and failed. Every time I attempted to loosen the pulley nut, the whole pulley assembly would rotate. I tried to hold the pulley as I turned the bolt, but couldn't get a grip on it. Am I missing something?

I want to remove it so that I can have access to the PS inlet joint. I want to replace the seal in there. The 10mm bolt holding the inlet joint seems impossible to remove with the pulley in the way.

It's kind of tight, but ez to do. You can remove the whole PS pump without taking out the pulley.

Then just clamp down the pulley, and take off the nut.

Thanks for the confidence. I'm going to try again tomorrow. I'm thinking of sticking a screwdriver into the pulley holes and holding it still while I turn the nut. How hard can it be?

Should I remove tension on the belt before/after doing this? I read there's a tensions adjuster on the pump.

1st you should be able to get to the pump without removing the pulley. I had virtually the same issue with my 3G and took the pump out. There is a DIY with instructions and Service Manual Scans on getting the pump out; its in Problems & Fixes. "Power Steeriing Pump Rebuild" or something close to that. It is probably VERY similar to the 2G.

However, if you still think you need to remove the pully, one thing to try is use the Honda Pulley Tool to hold the crank pulley in place. I think that'll keep the whole works from moving with the belt under tension.

Also - on the 3G anyhow, not sure about the 2G - I thought the PS Pump Pulley was reverse threaded. IF so, then holding the crank pulley will also hold the PS Pulley since the bolts work against each other.

Screwdriver through the pulley should help. Not sure about threading though. Be careful what your brace your screwdriver on though.
It would have saved me time when I swapped out alternator pulley's, oh well. I learned. Screwdriver should work.

I tried the screwdriver thing. No way. That was on there WAY too tight.

Also, it's not reverse threaded. Just counterclockwise to open like normal.

You'll note in the (3G) Service Manual scans that the Pulley Removal is done AFTER the pump is removed.

I dicked around the with the wrong tools to get that little bitch of a 10mm nut for the o-ring swap too. Could not do it. Had the pump removed and reinstalled in half the time I wasted trying to get just the inlet off. Did not need to remove the pulley.

Regardless, Good Luck with it. I'm sure you'll get it one way or another.

From the pictures of the pump in the post above the pulley has holes in it. There is a type of pulley holder that will grip through the holes.

An alternative is to take the pump out with the pulley and have someone remove the nut with an impact wrench.
