99 acura tl stuck in park and brake lights won't work

My 99 acura tl will not shift off of park. I have to push the button on side of shifter in order to bypass and be able to drive but didn't realize that my brake lights do not work as well. I replaced the brake sensor underneath the foot pedal and that did not solve the problem. Please can any one help me with this matter....scarred of dealer charging me and arm and a leg

ck the sensor install, ck the cruise control switch next to the new one for installed tight
ck fuses for brake lights

It wont shift out of park BECAUSE it has no brake lights!- a safety feature to protect you

do you get taillights with just headlight switch?

you dont need the dealer on this one- we can get you thru it

reck your work on the new switch, power leads on tight and correct- try swapping them?

My tail lights and head lights work, its just when I press on the brakes, the brake lights do not light up.

I checked all brake light fuses and they are all good. I had one bulb out and replaced it and still nothing. Im confused about the cruise control switch. Would that not allow the shift and light to not work?

Its either the switch or the brake fuse. Are you sure you checked the brake fuse? The TL has 3 fuse panels. Which one did you look at. Is the switch adjusted properly?

I checked the fuses on the drivers side, the passenger side and underneath the hood. I also double checked that the foot pedal was pressing against the switch. Where would the brake fuse be? I was told it could be the shifter solenoid. I have the whole center of my car torn apart to try to get to the solenoid and check if that could be the problem.

did you test the fuses with a multi meter, or just visual inspection?
Try new fuses in the possibles?

the cruise control disconnect switch on the brake pedal- next to the brake lamp switch-
if both are not set right you get problems

Ck the DIY section for install of switch= to double ck your work

on bulbs- Every bulb, including the center mount brake light must work, or the safety kicks in
Is there a brake LAMP warning light on? meaning the car knows a bulb is out

ck for power to wires for the brake light switch
should get power thru the switch when pedal pushed
New part may be defective!

stop digging into the console and find the brake light problem
If the brake lights worked- then it would be nuetral safety switch failure

Not sure if your TL has a STOP fuse in the fuse box under the hood (thats for ur brakes),but i can bet thats what causing it not to work according to what u described.

The reason i know is cuz this same thing happened to me on my Accord and then i checked out and saw my brakes werent lighting up when i stepped on it,so i changed the STOP fuse (20A fuse) and it started working again. Goodluck.

Well I'm still going thru it. I dropped it off at a garage and they can't figure out the problem either. I even went to autozone and purchased a new brake switch thinking the one I bought form Napa was defective. I checked all fuses and all are fine. Not sure what to do now. I guess I might have to fold and take it to the dealer. Crap!

a good shop should be able to find where you have power and where it stops
Thats why they are in business

start at fuse box, then switch, wires to brake lights, ground wires, bulbs- connectors
There a real suspect- a bad ground wire
Done any work in the trunk?
there is a main ground under the spare tire that gets disturbed in sub work

so the stereo install could have knocked a ground out, or they borrowed off a ground and its not right or ....

has that shop rechecked its work?
when a new prob appears after work,, I suspect that work!

dont go to acura for this- look in the phone book and internet for `automotive electrical repairs`
Those guys love wiring--
most everyone else has a severe dislike of tracing electrical probs--shorts are a b to find
time consuming and back breaking

talk to the stereo shop- look in trunk under spare tire for ground wire not right

I doubt it will mess your transmission up. Did you check the brake fuses; I have a tl so I don't know where yours would be, but check your manual or go to your fuse boxes.

no it doesnt hurt ther transmission
Its a safety lockout, so you know there is a problem and dont drive off with no brake lights

If all the lights have quit- ck the fuse first,, but its likely the switch
easy DIY, ck parts store for switch
Do you get tailights but no brake lights?

My symptoms were the same but also included the inability to operate cruise control. Changed the switch to no avail. From this post looked more for fuse. Found it labeled "stop" on right side of engine compartment, 20 Amp. Blown. Replaced. All now works. Thanks everyone.
