What happens if you take out the key while driving the car? (is it possible?)

I have always wondered what would happen if while driving you twisted the key to turn off the engine...does the car not let you? I figure with auto transmission you can't take out the key unless the car's in park...but what about manual?

Also what would happen if while driving fast like 60+ you put the car into reverse. Does the car let you do either of these things? If so what will happen?

hmmmmm... good question ... my uneducated guess will be if you force the key out, it would break it in half not to mention some potential engine damage ?

I can take my key out of my jeep while its moving. Never tried in the bimmer. In the jeep, the engine turns off obviously and you loose power steering and breaking. I've done it a few times to unlock the glovebox on the go. If you do try it, which I advise you not to, make sure you are going strait. The steering wheel locks up if you take the key out and you cant turn.

You can not do this with an automatic.

The auto tranny wont go into reverse, it will be locked while on the go. You can probably go into neutral while moving and take out your key but as 540 said, youll lose power steering etc etc.

My 1994 Altima shut off on me once and of course everything stopped working: steering, shifter locked, etc...I would figure the same thing would happen but I know that on almost any and every auto, it will not let you take the ker out. I thought on a manual you could take the key out to turn the car off while moving if it you placed the shifter in neutral? My buddy used to do it all the time in his Saab...

I dont think you can take the key out unless the shifter is in park, thats the way most newer cars are. Though I havent tried it on the acura, get it up to speed, throw it in park and pull out the key....let us know how you make out

My dad pulled the key out one time in his corvette and he was able to function everything as if the key was in there.

correct

you can turn the car off, but you cant take the key out

AND, you cant restart the engine, until you put the car in park... so... basically

DONT TRY IT!!

My friend had a Saturn LS1 or SL1 .. whatever it was called. You can pull the key right out of the ignition without twisting it and the car would still run. Kind of messed up.. it was standard too. BUuuut now he crashed it and ended up buying a 6G Celica.

Yep it's locked out. It will only allow you to turn counterclockwise and remove when the car is in park. Acura is smarter than that.

Many older cars could do this, I've had a few it's due to a really worn down lock cylinder. I think heavy keychains for a few years can do this damage. Heavy keychains in general are a no-no but I always manage to have one.

I think theres a certain speed that like is a "cut off" point to where you can't put the car into reverse, because i remember i missed a turn by a few feet and i going like 3-5MPH and i was able to stick it into reverse, all it did was stop and then start reversing like normal.....

Good one! I can take the key out of my 06 Vulcan 1600 after I start it. I like the feature cause it keeps the key from banging around the chrome nacelle and scratching it up. I can see why, for safety's sake, it can't be done in most cars but being able to do so would might long-term ignition switch damage from the weight of a key chain hanging from it.

Well this can definitely be done in a manual car since you can turn off the car no matter what gear you are in and should be able to start the car in whatever gear you are in as long as you ahve the clutch depressed... albeit, i don't have a manual TL, but on my bike, it's stalled out on me before while on the highway and i just restart it while moving(bike has been long gone since that incident).

But I have no idea why anyone would want to attempt something so..... pointless

I'm thinking that perhaps our cars imobilizer might know if the key is missing and kill the engine. My 94 camaro had the passkey theft deterrent but it only prevented the car from starting. Once the car was running, you could take the key out. The security light would come on, but the car would stay running. You had to have the key or it would kill injectors after 3 seconds, so no push starting either.

Are you really that bored to think of stupid topics like this?

You should try to get it out, if you suceed the steering column will lock as soon as you try to turn the wheel, the key will be locked out, and darwin will play his role.

next topic this guy makes will be like "What will happen if you drive off a clif? Do you think the car will land on its wheels?"

I didn't say I was going to try it or wanted to try it...I said I've always wondered what would happen if you did it. With the key so close to my knee I have been worried what if I accidentally hit it and it twisted to off. It's a question about the mechanics of the key system and the car, not a suicide question.

My friend's dad was taking us to school one day in his Nissan Titan I'm guessing it was around an 04-05 model cause it was new. And well out of nowhere the truck jerked and the wheels squeeled, I thought we got hit, but when we asked what happened he said it went into reverse and it wasnt supposed to do that. They have the kind of shifter like ours where it doesnt have a button to press but the mis-shaped track.
I've always wondered if all cars would go into reverse while moving... Hopefully the TL wont!
