TL-S vs. Older Camaro

So this kid keeps bugging me and telling me that his car, an older Camaro V8, will whoop my car, 02 TL Type-S. Not sure of the year, I'm thinking early 90's? Someone post some pictures, and I can tell you what it is...

I know my TL-S isn't the quickest car out there, and it has some age on it. It has had its scheduled service, so I am where I should be. I do have some pretty worn All-Season tires, if that matters.

Anyways, about the Camaro. I see this kid around town all the time. He constantly floors the mess out of the old Camaro. It has extremely loud pipes, and the motor doesn't sound exactly smooth. It actually sounds pretty horrible. I have seen it run before, but he was messing with my GF's Accord EX 4-Cyl. When he goes WOT with that thing, my lord, it blows awful blue smoke everywhere. Right now, his transmission is blown. This is like his 3rd one. From the appearance of the car, I don't think it is in top shape. And from what the motor sounds like, it sounds like its gonna blow. Also, he has alot of stereo equipment in the back, which I'm sure weighs a ton.

I think I can beat him to 60, but after that he will slowly pull on me. I feel like my TL-S's performance slowly weakens after 70mph.

This is my plan if we do race:

>Fully automatic mode--let the computer do its thing.
>Take out spare tire, jack, tools, all other stuff, floor mats, anything I can...
>Make sure gas tank is low.
>Also I need to SeaFoam my engine before the race.
>Leave VSA off, or should I leave it on? I need a good jump on him.

I think my TL can take him, but then I start doubting myself. I don't wana be like, yeah, your POS can't run with me. Then I get blown out of the water and look stupid. But he rolls up on me all the time and is like, this can take your little car!

So I guess win or lose my TL-S will always look and sound better! Plus, I have a four-door, FWD, luxury sedan that isn't meant to be raced. Driven with a sport intention, but not raced. But, I'm thinking once I hit VTEC-land, its all over.

What do you guys think? I know its not an actual race, but it may be! I don't race often, so I need the experienced to help me out.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the other hand, I played with a Mustang GT A/T today. (99-04) Didn't race it, but we were at a light, and he was in the other lane. He was in front, and there was a car in front of me. The car infront of me turned off, and he punched it when the light turned green. I just laid back and went unseen. Then, I let him hear my intake-resonator-free VTEC in first gear. lol That got his attention, and he started revving his car. I didn't want to race, it was mainly for laughs and to see if he would try. He slowly passed me, and I punched it again. He continued his revving. lol It wouldn't have done any good, because he turned left after he revved it about 2 times. My TL likes to tease.

It was that ugly yellow with big gawdy chrome rims and those fake stick-on fender vents up front.

go for it man. Before you race though, say something like this, "ya, I think you will smoke me, I just wanna see how bad I will get smoked by you."

If you win, you will feel very good. If you lose, he can't say shxt because you already said that you were going to lose :P

mustang gt v6 sucks balls. my jeep liberty is faster than that thing

Want to find out a easy way to see how good of a race it will be?

Take the weight of your car, and divide it by the current horsepower.

Example:

My car weighs 3700lbs with me in it. My car made(stock) 239whp. 3700/239=15.5 hp/lbs

funniest thing. this morning on my way to work this blue camaro maybe' 88 was infront of me and he was driving slow. i tailgated him for like a mile and we both turn onto 167th street next to the expressway. he floors it and the car shifted to the right. I dropped into second and floored it too. i pull right on his tail and then shift to third and put the car back in automatic and cruised passed him. he looked pertty shocked as i passed him.

oh. I have an 03 tl-s

Haa don't go around saying it's slow, my freind has a 02 GT, 260hp and 320trq. And that thing weighs about the same as a TL-S. And that thing does 0-50 in 5.8sec. If u have a 6m/t then u could hang with him.

FYI i think the 93-95's run mid-low 14s in the 1/4 and 96-97 run low 14s-high 13s...I've owned LT1 Trans am's both WS6's..My first one was an 4speed auto droptop and it ran 14.0-14.2s, my 2nd was a 6speed that stock was 13.70s...with an exhuast, airbox, 373s, radials, TB, spacer, free mods i was running 13.10s...after my heads, cam etc...i was running low 12's....just depends on what the guy has....if he can drive so on and so forth...good luck!!

You need to qualify that assertion:

A stock TLS should:
Smoke a V6 Mustang
Run tight with a GT AT
Get edged out by a well driven GT MT
Get annihilated by a GT500 (or Terminator if prev gen)

Thanks guys for your answers.

For reference, it looks like this:

But not near as clean. Really guys, I don't think it has been maintained very good. It doesn't sound smooth at all. And something about it overheats all the time? Not sure which motor he has. Its not a Targa either, or T-Top.

That is a 3rd Generation Camaro, the only models you should worry about are the Z-28 or IROC Z-28 models (the other models/engine configurations pose no threat to your car unless its been heavily modded). The 5.7L (350 cubic inch) engine'd cars move out pretty good, they are able to post very low 14 second 1/4 mile times, the L-98 engine is a torque monster so if he has traction you are gonna get killed out of the hole. On the rear bumper cover it will read "5.7 Tuned Port Injection", this engine was only availible with an auto transmission. There is also a Z-28 and IROC with a 5.0L (305 cubic inch) engine, this poses less of a threat as most of these cars were only capable of very high 14's to very low 15's in the 1/4 mile, this engine was availible with an auto or 5 speed manual. The picture you posted is of an "RS" model, the best engine availible in that car was a 305 cubic inch throttle body injected set up which delivered lackluster performance..... it would be lucky to post a high 15 second 1/4 mile time.

These cars had quite a few reliability issues and needed to be well maintained to deliver peak performance. Be careful if its the 5.7 Z-28...... you will have to hope his car is running bad or he just boils his tires on the hole shot otherwise you will most likely get beat....... any of the other engine set ups and you have a good chance, if its an "RS" model you will likely put a serious beating on him.

Hope this info helps

I was going to say DESTROYED but some people (mainly delusional Hondaphiles) take that dramatic characterization of the obvious as an affront.

Honestly, a supercharged TL 6MT would still get ripped apart by an 03-04 Cobra or GT500.

Even with drag radials, and weigh reduction? I bet accurteins lightweight TL with a s/c, and drag radials could keep up.

My money would still be on the Terminator, which in stock trim runs mid 12s and just gets insanely faster with some bolton mods and tuning.

I don't think it says 5.7 Tuned Port Injection, because I would've noticed.

I remember him saying once that he had the little speed recorder on his iPod and it recorded 0-60 times and other stuff. He said it recorded his Camaro at like 8.4 seconds or something like that. I know the TL-S was like 6.2 so I'm guessing since my car isn't exactly new anymore, its around 6.5-8.

I didn't know if the iPod App. was really accurate so I never paid attention to what he was saying... But if it is accurate, I'm sure my TL-S would kill it.

Your 2g TL-s 0-60 is around 6.6 actually. My base TL did 0-60 6.3 And the camero if it did 0-60 in 8.5 that slower then tsx.

It's a nickname for the 03-04 Mustang Cobra. LINK With few exceptions, it really lives up to its nickname and its the only model in that Mustang generation that I would ever want to own.

Same here. It came down to an '04 Cobra or a new TL and at the time I didn't want another fast car to mod so I chose the TL.

Those things are unbelievable what they will do on a factory stock longblock. With someone that knows how to tune they will live a long happy life at the 750hp level and some have taken them past 1,000 hp on stock everything.

The first few cheap mods; pulley, exhaust, and intake will add another 100hp.

We ran into a Kenne-Bell equipped Termi in the Brabus CL65 (704hp) and we only put a carlength on him by 100mph. Very impressive for only $3,500 in mods on a stock longblock.

Agreed.

I've had a co-worker begging me to race his TPI 5.0 GTA and I've turned it down for the last year because I don't race the TL. I'm about to run him just to get it over with. No matter what, he's going to get me out of the hole, those TPI engines, even the little 5.0 would get off the line pretty well. I don't think I will have a problem running him down though.

Going to do a track day with some co-workers and he thinks he can get me through the corners.
