Car Dolly or Car Hauler? Need shims??
Hey guys! For our cars would it be a better idea to use a tow dolly or a car hauler? I am moving from Michigan to Texas, so, I'll be towing my 2007 TL behind my 26' Penske Truck. In either case do you think I'll need shims (made from 2 x 8 x 12 boards) to increase the run on the ramp and/or to prevent bumper damage while it's on the trailer or dolly? I was hoping I'd just be able to drive it on to the trailer or dolly. My car is 100% stock.
I spent a good while searching for another thread, however, I could only find posts related to towing with your Acura TL lol

Yeah, I figured it'd be fine overall. I'm trying to figure out if I need shims to get the car on the trailer without messing up the front bumper lol.

It depends upon the trailer itself, but my gut tells me with a stock ride height you should have no issues.

May be too late for this response but...
I have hauled 2 3rd gens using a tow dolly from uHaul; one with an aspec kit and one without. My experience was the a spec required extensive shims to get it over the hump on the dolly and into the cradle the non aspec required some shims but not as many. Also had to have 1 person lifting the front bumper slightly going into the cradle other wise wouldnt clear for the one with the aspec kit even with a ton of boards I brought.
Both were suv's hauling one was h2 other was landcruiser so standard height towing rigs

Nah, not too late. Going to try and load it up tomorrow as a matter of fact. Thanks for answering Mine is Non-A-Spec. It'll be with a Penske 26' Truck using their car carrier. I have had one 2x8 ripped into either 12" shims, so, hopefully this goes alright. I'm terrified now lmfao

Made it down to the DFW. For future reference, you DO NOT need shims IF it's the trailer with all four wheels off the ground. However, if you're like me and coming from a cold climate during the winter and the ramp, your tires and the trailer itself is covered in ice then DO NOT give it too much gas at the top of the ramp. I did that and it shot one of the ramps off of the trailer leaving my car supported by ONE ramp on the driver side. Had my two buddies not been there to help I would have done some serious damage. Unloading it with a breeze. Thanks for your help gents!
