Replacing water pump, should dealer do timing belt too?

Water pump failed, it’s leaking as diagnosed by the dealer. They said the oil pump is showing signs of leaking as oil is coming through a “weep hole” to indicate failure soon.

They quoted $950-$1000 for the water pump. I don’t have a choice, that has to be done. They can rebuild or reseal the oil pump for $300 more since it’ll be torn apart for the water pump anyway.

Shiuld they just go ahead and replace the timing belt if they’re in there? It was done at around 110,000 miles and the car now has ~179,000 on it. It’s a 2006 TL. To be honest, I didn’t even think of it when I dropped it off earlier. So I don’t even have a quote for that. Would it be a whole lot more since the water pump will be removed anyway?

I don’t plan on keeping it much longer. It’s in really nice condition, but I want a newer car as I don’t want to deal with maintenance issues on an aging vehicle.

I would get the timing belt done now, You can dramatically increase resale value when you have proof the TB/WP has been done especially by the dealer.

YES on the timing belt--no brainer.

Got it done. I was curious why the service advisor didn’t have the whole thing in the quote. It was only a couple hundred more to have it all done. He said he was trying to save me money since we plan on selling or trading it in soon.

Thanks!

Now we just need to decide which car to let go.
2006 TL in really nice condition 179,000 miles (new timing belt & water pump!)
or
2006 Civic 2dr excellent condition 108,000 miles

both always dealer serviced. If my wife wasn’t dead set on getting a newer Genesis, I’d be perfectly content to keep driving these two cars we have.

I know which one I'd keep, even with higher miles.

Haha. It’s an auto.

Both cars are nice and get the job done. I just want reliability. I’m guessing at this point with the recent service, it’s a wash.

But the power steering on the TL is slowly leaking. I put in a quarter bottle every few months. Maybe I go through a full bottle every 12-16 months.

Good call on the timing belt service at the same time. Thanks!!!

IMHO:
Replace the PS hose o-ring at the pump--it's a known leaker and a cheap fix to a messy problem.

FWIW:: Of course, while they are in there, replace the timing belt, etc. Make sure to have them check the oil pump seal, and motor mounts as well. As far as which car to sell, from an anticipated maintenance cost standpoint, I would select the TL. The TL should have a welcome market, especially with up to date maintenance. With respect to maintenance costs, going forward, you may encounter expensive suspension issues on the TL, which should not become an issue on the Civic, for many more miles.

For sure, get the full Timing Belt kit, and have it done with the water pump. They are already working in that area so minus get it done now while you can.
