I wanted to hear people's comments and suggestions as to what you think is the best high grade fully synthetic oil to use in the Base 3G TL?

I've heard that Amsoil, Mobil 1 Super Syn, Valvoline SynPower, and Pennzoil Platinum Super Syn, and Castro Syn are the best. Any one recommend any of these?

I have done a topic search and most of the oil discussions dance around the issue or every one recommends something different so what good does that help me? :thumbsdow

It seems it doesn't really make a difference what full synthetic you really use. Amsoil, Valvoline, Pennzoil, Castro, and Mobil 1 full synthetic all seem to get the job done.

I just want to make sure there is no valve chatter and knocking/pinging. I hate that stuff!

This will also render a myriad of different responses. I use pennzoil (because I get it for free). If I got Mobil for free I'd use it. Or any other synthetic.

I've been using Valvoline SynPower and its been working very well. I was just curious to find out if people have been able to find any retailer or oil/lube place that offers Amsoil motor oil without having to buy it online?

Redline oil is what I run with my supercharger. I have also used royal purple which is only slightly cheaper than $10-11 a quart Redline. I figure if you are going to run synthetic might as well run something good. If you look at them many oils that claim to be synthetic are mixes.

Another thing to look at is a good oil filter. The S2000 filter is good and slightly larger than stock with better filter materal and cheaper since you get it at honda. Amsoil is the best but you have to pay for shipping. I bought 6 for $60 and that should cover me for quite a while.

I'll just do the short answer since I've answered a hundred times already.

If you want the absolute toughest oil that will give you the best protection under the harshest conditions and the lowest wear, Redline is your oil. Motul is right up there too.

For everything else like Mobil One, Pennzoil Platinum, Castrol Ultra, etc, they're all about the same, buy whatever is on sale.

Keep in mind there are like 100 different Mobil One oils, some are much better than others. Their 0w-40 is one of the best.

Royal Purple and Amsoil filters will give you the best combo of flow and filtration. The S-2000 size filters are a little larger and a direct fit on the TL.

This entire site is based upon peoples experiences, opinions, and sharing of knowledge.
If you are looking for black and white...this ain't it! I don't care if it's oil, cold air intakes, sway bars, brakes, gasoline types, etc., you will find a vast selection of just about any topic you wish to choose.

You can't go wrong with any of the major synthetics, and some will swear upon the dino oil producing simlar results as synthetic.

Surely, you must have gotten a hint of that when doing your search?

I am going to disagree with IHC because he left out Amsoil in the preferred oil brands

If you read Amsoils' literature, they have the lowest wear of any that he mentioned...especially the Signature Series.

But, that's the game we play, and IMO the people on this site are within the top 2% of the population when it comes to Acura TL knowledge. They are the best in North America......period!

LOL. I thought about it after I hit the submit but I was too lazy to go back an edit. Amsoil is definately at the top of the list.

I've got some great links (I hate to take another oil thread off topic lol) of particle counts directly compared to UOAs to show the UOA's ineffectiveness at showing engine wear. One oil in particular was the SSO. It showed low wear metals in the UOA but under the microscope it was allowing quite a bit of wear.

I'll see if I can post the links since I'm permanently banned from there.

This topic has been discussed as many times in as many threads as there have been issues of MAD Magazine going back to the 1960's.


Just use any name brand full synthetic and you'll be fine. I use NAPA's own brand 5W-20 which is Valvoline SynPower with the NAPA name on it. I have 91,000, and a few months ago on my last visit to Acura of Manhattan, Tony, the head mechanic was under hood, unscrewed the oil cap, called me over, and said "Look In There, You See How Clean That Is? That's because you've been using synthetic."

As for Mobil1, I'm sure it's good oil, but since ExxonMobil pocketed $45 Billion in profits in 2008 while ripping us off for almost $5/gal at the pump, I don't think they need any of my money, OR YOURS.

Just use any name brand full synthetic and you'll be fine.

This wasn't a good deal at all. usually advance auto part, or pepboys (going on right now) has mobil 1 ep 5q with mobil 1 ep filter for $30. 30x4= $120.

or even better like i did 2 weeks ago with advance auto part.

they had a promo ( expend $100 and get $50 coupon future purchase) while they were running the mobil ep 5q with filter for $30. if i include the coupon, everything came out for $70 20 quart and 4 filters.

I meant to comment on the "full synthetic" part.

There are very, very full synthetics out there even though they're labeled as such.

Amsoil makes one dino and the rest full grp IV PAO synthetic.

Redline makes nothing but grp V ester synthetic.f

Some Mobil One like their EP and 0w-40 are mostly grp IV synthetics, even a little grp V, but the majority of their line is a regular grp III highly refined dino.

Motul makes only grp V Ester.

Castrol has Helix (sp) but I don't think it's sold here. GC is a full grp IV PAO but the rest of their line, even the Ultra is not a full synthetic.

Pennzoil Platinum is a grp III dino.

I'm sure I missed a bunch.

But yes, the TL will live a very long life on any modern oil changed at a reasonable interval.
