With all the oil threads, the answer is always the same, use whatever you you want and you'll have no problems, as long as it's API certified and the correct viscosity. Synthetic or Dino!

oreillys and kragen are the same company- considering how many specials they run on oil it would not be surprising if they are owned somehow by a major oil company
and they market an in house brand thats a name brand in a different bottle? cool |

You have already found an answer, I was just doing some forum browsing and came across this question. I work for O'Reillys and this past week did some research because I was wondering the same thing. It is packaged by Omni Industries but they use oil from exxon/mobil and shell.

I just bought a 5 gallon jug of this with a Fram filter. It cost me $20.60 after tax. Can't beat that price for a "full" synthetic.

I used it in my wife's Pacifica but I haven't done a change yet in my 06 TL (just bought it). A BMW mechanic told me that he uses the Oreilly brand in his BMW's and swears by it.

Here's the website for their fluids. The OMNI plant is in Shreveport, LA. You shouldn't have any worries using this oil:

Although I'm not worried, I'm curious to see what the specs are on this oil compared to other "full" synthetic oils.
$20.60 for 5 quarts + filter? You can't beat it, even if it wasn't "full" synthetic.

Called their tech support. HTHS for their O'reilly synthetic 5W20 is 2.63, which is a little lower than M1 5W20 (2.77).
Also learned they will have 0W20 in stores starting the first week in Feb.

was going to get the Ford 5-20 syn blend until I saw this on the Kragen circular.
Looks pretty good, some people didn't like it on bobistheoilguy.com VVV Analyzed by Holt Cat at their San Antonio lab All elements not included are 0. 5w20: Pb 1 Si 3 Na 456 B 1 Mo 1 Ca 1815 Mg 3 Zn 767 P 694 Vis @100C 9.9 (???) TBN 8.0 ISO 22/15 Lab said the particle counts were high on this oil(?!?) Considering that and the viscosity I'd like to see this sample re-run. 5w30: Si 2 Na 431 Ca 1413 Mg 3 Zn 695 P 623 V @100C 11.0 TBN 8.0 ISO 19/14 I have the 5w30 in my car now. It seems to be slightly nosier on cold startup (there are some noises of concern but they didn't start with this fill). Once it's hot though, it purrs like a kitten, smoothest it's ever been. Probably the thickest 30wt that it's had at 11.0. |

^^^ I wouldn't necessarily be discouraged by a single VOA. It's probably fine for the average driver.
I've run M1 5w20 exclusively for 106K miles and it's been great. I did a UOA on my last oil change which came out excellent. I decided to give M1 0w40 a try on my last oil change due to it's high HTHS and full syn properties. So far, it looks like it's costing me about 2 mpg due to the higher VIS. Going to run it for the same interval as the last oil change (8150 miles) and do another UOA just for comparison, but probably will switch back to 5w20. I may try Honda's 5w20 syn blend (made by ConocoPhillips, SN/GF-5) on the next change. It's only $3.09 (with military discount, normally $3.43) at my local Honda dealer.

Honda just released there "Ultimate" Full Synthetic oil with API ratings (SN/GF-5) which are the most recent standards adopted by the American Petroleum Institute. It seems to be really good so far. They make in 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30 and 10W-30 so far. On paper it on par with Mobil 1. I have ran Mobil 1 5W-30 in my Type-S for 20,000 and considering a change, but I will let other people review Honda's Full Syn a little more before I decide to change or not.
This PDF guide gives a real good explanation of oil ratings: http://www.api.org/certifications/en...010_120210.pdf |

Maybe it's not yet been released to the dealers? The Honda 5w20 blend that I posted on 2 posts ago meets the SN/GF-5 specs and it's only $3.43/qt. The 0w20 blend is over $7, go figure. Also, the bottles didn't say "Ultimate" on them, but they just arrived in the new packaging last week. (Old packaging had ExxonMobil on the back).

^^^^ correction. My parts guy couldn't find the "Ultimate" because the new part numbers (08798-9037/8/9) haven't yet been loaded into their system. They can't even order it yet through Honda, but have to go straight to ConocoPhillips.
It is indeed full syn. However, according to the pictures in this thread, the bottles are not labeled for SN or GF-5??? http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2873437 Retail is $7.65/qt.

Honda offers a Military discount? What percentage? And is this just for parts?

I'm leaving right now to pick up a case of the Honda 5w20 syn blend for $3.10/qt (plus tax)... FYI, my parts guy told me that the 5w20 blend price is going up in Feb. He didn't know how much. That's why I decided to grab a case now....

Marketing at it's best. A "syn blend" or "semi-synthetic" is nothing more than a grpIII blended with a grpII or grpI oil. Or in other words it's a bunch of dino oils blended together with a higher price tag. This is common place regardless of the label. Most any oil is a blend of different groups but sometimes they choose to label different and charge more.
Any oil will work fine and you're not going to notice a difference in the way it runs. My car is a rolling experiment. I've used only two oils in it since new not counting the factory fill. I used Amsoil ACD for the first 65,000 or so miles. And it's going to be Redline 5w-30 for the rest of it's life. So at teardown time I will be able to see exactly how the oil did. I prefer an oil that is not API certified so there are no limits on the amount of ZDDP the oil can have. This is why Redline and some Amsoil oils are not certified. If they were, they would not be as good. They have 2-3 times the amount of allowable ZDDP additives which is a good thing if you're concerned about the engine lasting a long time. Why change from one mediocre oil to another? Mobil One is a great grpIII oil that's very cheap if you shop around. There just isn't much difference between these types of oils listed but at least you know M1 is a quality product and is all you will ever need. If you want a significant change you're going to pay. A true synthetic grp IV oil like Royal Purple and many Amsoil brands will start around $8 a quart and a grpV oil like Redline starts around $10 a quart. There just aren't many true synthetics out there.

^^^^Not telling me anything I don't already know.
And yes, for the avg driver, any of today's oil (dino, blend, full syn) changed at reg intervals will be fine. That fact, along with a VOA that indicates the Honda blend is on par with M1 for only $3.10/qt is why I'm going to give it a try. Even at the full retail of $3.43/qt, the price is hard to beat. Again, I'm not advocating for/against any oil, just providing info on options available to users.

Honda 5w20 syn blend available for $2.45/qt
Just got back from my local Honda dealer. The Honda (ConocoPhillips) 5w20 syn blend is available from their bulk stock for $2.45/qt (their full retail price for bulk). Just bring in a jug and they'll fill it.
I can't vouch for other Honda dealers, but this is a great deal if your Honda dealer will do the same.

If an oil says 5w-20 it has a certain viscosity range it has to fall in. You're not going to be able to see a viscosity difference with your eyes when pouring with the same weight oil. As for feeling a difference especially with the same weight, pretty much impossible. If you went from a 0w-20 to a 50wt, you might be able to feel a difference if you were really paying attention.

FYI, you should be able to get the Honda syn blend 5w20 for $2.45qt from your local Honda dealer's bulk supply...cheaper than O'reilly and similar/same specs (which is also pretty much equivalent to M1 5w20).

While O'Reilly's front label says "Full Synthetic", the back label states that it is a "blend of base oils". I do not think it can be both full and blend. So I am not really sure what is in their bottle. You might want to check it out.
