DIY on 105k service? Tips/hints/suggestions

I have searched and not seen any DIY's on the 105k service, i.e timing belt, water pump etc. I purchased the timing belt kit a few months ago when I had an indy mechanic lined up to do the labor. Since then the mechanic has closed up shop and after giving it more thought, I've decided I'd like to tackle this myself.
I have shimmed valves, replaced cams, etc in small engines (dirt bikes) so I'm familiar with TDC, cam placement, and the top end of a motor etc. I'm familiar that the crank pulley will be a bitch to remove and I'll probably need a flywheel puller etc to get off. I figure since the TL is a SOHC, that it should be super easy since every motor I've messed with has had 2 cams.
I still need to pick up the idler pulley and tensioner pulley and then I will have the complete kit. I am not due for another 4k miles so I have a little time.
I'm sorry this whole post is kinda jumbled together lol
Does anyone have any tips or advice/guidance for me? I plan to pick up a service manual to follow.

Yeah as mentioned in the linked thread, the biggest thing would be having a strong impact, some paint, and make SURE you follow the sequence for putting the belt on and leave all the slack at the tensioner. Timing belts are easy once you do one, I had the belt change in my CL down to an hour after doing it a few times (stupid oil leak ruining my belts). On that car since it was 12 years old when I first did it, I needed to heat that crank bolt up before the impact could even touch it... had my 600ft-lb IR impact running at 150psi and it STILL didn't move. Heat + PB fixed that. As for the paint... I just put marks on any gear or pulley that the belt was on and painted a reference on the block, extra insurance over the stock marks and easier to see. It's more intimidating than it is difficult.

Alright sweet guys! Thanks so much! Kinda stumped why the cam gears don't have TDC marks or anything? weird lol Looks quite simple actually, except I will definitely be removing the PS pump

I just did my 105k.. If you hold out a couple of days I'll put up a detailed DIY with pics.

The 2G DIY is a good guide but there are some differences.. plus some skipped inside details.

No. Don't need to remove PS Pump. The cam gears DO HAVE TDC marks.

Maybe I overlooked that in the 2G DIY; about them having TDC marks. I think I can do it. I can't wait until you post up the DIY Majo! It looks super easy.

fixed

If you've done it before, it'll take your <4 hrs to do everything. If it's your first time.. It'll take you a day if you have all the right tools, a buddy, and a kid to usher you the right tools & parts. I definitely agree that it's a lot more intimidating than it is difficult. Respect for the timing of the cams & crank and an attention to details is definitely needed for the job.

btw.. I removed my CP bolt with a 2' breaker bar.

Get a swear jar.. put a $1 every time you let one go. You should have enough money at the end to take all your friends out for &

or to buy a new front & side mount, which will probably be destroyed like mine.

@ your edit. I'm sure I'll have an usher for tools, and a buddy. I shimmed my first bikes valves, my first time, in about 30 minutes. Although that has nothing to do with the timing belt on my car, it required a lot of attention/detail not to drop grommets, timing chain, anything down into the bottom end etc. I plan on studying the DIY over and over so I'll know exactly where to go, what to remove, etc.

Did you not have an impact to put on the CP bolt?

I'll put 25 cents in a swear jar and end up with enough to take my friends out haha

I'm only 20 years old and I said putting my springs on would be a huge accomplishment for me, now I'm ready to tackle something a little larger.

nope.. no impact gun. You'll need at least a 750 ft.lb one for that sucker. If you have a decent compressor, get a gun. You'll still need a torque wrench and the hex tool to spec in the cp bolt though.. 181 ft.lbs.

I have a Craftsman impact, snap on compressor pushing about 125psi. I don't think my impact will be enough Torque wrench as well, except I think mine is in.lb I'll just rent a ft.lb. What is the "hex" tool?

Go to Autozone and rent a torque wrench.. they'll charge you the cost of it.. ~$100 and reimburse your card when you return it. You need a 50mm hex socket to keep the crank from turning when torquing the bolt in, not needed for removal if you get a sufficient impact gun.

Oh yeah ok I gotcha, had a brain fart. I'll probably pick one up anyway or maybe try to borrow one just in case the impact is insufficient. I'll keep an eye out for your DIY, may I request that you send me a link to it once you get it posted

I just replaced my plugs at 99k with Iridiums so I'm good in that book. I'd say my drivebelt might as well be replaced while I'm at it.

So I still need my Idler Pulley, Thermostat, and Coolant.

I will be on the lookout for your writeup I will leave you at peace until then baha

Removing the plugs relieves pressure when turning the crank as well. If you find it too difficult (shouldn't be), try removing them.

Ah true I didn't think about that, I'll remove the front 3 if I run into any problems.

I'm taking notes!
