Vinyl Wrap

So i have been thinking about repainting my 2008 Acura TL type S matte black (currently NBP) then I came across a video on youtube about vinyl wrapping which I feel is a better becasue when I decide it's time for a new car, I peel it off and sell it as is. How do you guys feel about this idea, and even the color.

The only modification I currently have which isn't much of a mod is 20% tinted windows. Does anyone know anything about this? Let me know your opinions. Thanks in advance.

The guy that did the beemer said it cost him $120 and a little bit of his time each day after work.

I vinyl wrapped my car flat black. This was just a random project i decided to pull the trigger on.... I had no experience whatsoever on vinyling anything. I just watched a few vids on youtube and got some advice from friends who do vinyl stickers. Here's a few pics of the process and outcome...

Hate it, Love it...It was my first time... it took me 1 week and a day to complete....did a panel a day after work =)

oh, and for the record... I didn't pay over $3000 bucks that most people pay to vinyl their car....

I paid about $120 for all materials... and i did all the work myself, with some help from my fiance from time to time

=) enjoy

DIY!!!!

so this will be my little DIY since there's not really much to mention =)

THINGS YOU NEED:
Vinyl (about 25 yards give it take..also depending how much you mess up)... measurements for the vinyl i got were 25 yrds and 48 inches wide....

2 qts of application fluid for the vinyl

I used a felt squeegee so it wont scratch the surface of the vinyl.

I also used a heat gun from Harbor Freight... $10 FTW!!!!

1 XActo knife and scissors
AND LOTS OF PATIENCE!!!!!

I really considered this, but I wasn't ready for the possibility of the vinyl becoiming impossible to remove after 2-3 years. Some metallic based vinyl's can bond with the paint and wouldhave to be sanded down to remove if the elements are over exposed to it.

I provided the link to his thread....face palm....
I went through it for you, and in less than 5 mins....

WOW! so many comments from just a day!... Thanks for all the great comments. I really appreciate it!...

As for the material, my friend makes stickers on the side, so he orders loads and loads of vinyl and i just bought 25 yards of Oracal brand flat black vinyl from him.

anyone know how easy it is to take this off?? I would consider doing this but would be weary about taking it off. What effect does it have on the under paint??

none, you can take it off when ever and still have beautiful paint underneath.

I talked to a cab driver in germany, and he says that alot of cabs there are wrapped. Cars can have over 500 000km and when they sell them, they take the wrap off and it looks like a new car.

Jordan, it's a cool process, but it's very time consuming and you've got to hav a LOT of patience! As you can see, there's carbon fiber too (along with the matte black). Let us know what you decide to do.

^i wouldn't say that

i think he paid 120 for the materials but not for the vinyl, I mean getting 25 yrds and 48 inches wide will never cost anyone $120... I was gonna do this as well, and i was told i needed to buy 50 linear feet... the cost per linear foot is $20 for any size over 50 linear feet, do the math and u will find out that it is not as cheap as u think...

if u guys find it for 120 then let me know lol

That is definitely not something that I would try as a DIY. Looks sharp though, especially if you can remove it down the line and it doesn't cause any issues with the paint underneath. I wonder how it holds up to rock chips?

there is a guy in Calgary (the only one I have heard off) that does this kind of work. he sands the surface fist, then applies white primer, then sharpies what ever, then applies clear coat. try googling "sharpie r6" or something like that. It's pretty neat.

That guy did it right on top of the paint. Didn't do any prep work or clear coat cause he wanted the "brush" strokes to show through. He used a Sharpie Oil Based Paint Pen.

If I had that kind of talent I would definately do the hood and trunk of my car

I was the one who posted that thread. Sadly the car has been removed from cars.com therefore the pictures don't show up.

I didn't think it looked that great to be honest

Meh.. a true vinyl wrap, such as that on the IS, is around 3-4k. Look up "Fellers." They've done some pretty awesome work, even the door jams. OP, have you even considered the door jams...

this is something i considered....but that 3m vinyl isnt that cheap...id say it would cost in the ballpark of around 800 to 1000 just for the vinyl...thats just a ballpark figure..i mean i paid like 160 for a 58" x 96"...and that would have been enough to do the hood and roof only....with some left over for the grille or other smaller pieces of the car

I bought a roll of vinyl from a local sign shop that was 4'x30' for $50, and it only became cheaper the more you bought.

Vinyl can be bought cheap, but not from vendors that sell them specifically for cars, even though it's the same thing.

Why do I have an overwhelming urge to do something insanely stupid and wrap my car in the red CF?
