VTEC Solenoid Issue P2649

This morning I left a friend's house and as crazy as it is I literally had to cross over a creek and down a 1/2 mile mud driveway to get to a road. That creek is only inches deep so maybe, at most, it could have been deep enough to hit the wheel a little but not much. I did not notice VSA come on at any time down this road because I kept the car in 1st gear and drove very slow (mostly because it was mud and my car used to be clean).

Just as I got to a road my engine light came on but no code. So I pulled over, turned off the car, waited and then turned back on.

Now my check engine light is on, VSA is lit just next to check engine, and the exclamation point that signifies VSA is lit. Sill no code on LCD.

I stopped by Autozone and they said it codes P2649 and here is what it states:

VTEC solenoid valve circuit high voltage

Probably cause:
Open or short circuit condition
Poor electrical connection
Failed VTEC solenoid valve

So it may be completely unrelated to this "road" I had to drive on this morning but it is ironic that it happened just after those types of surfaces.

I don't know where the VTEC valve is located but I'd love to try to fix this myself, if possible, given that this car is well out of warranty.

Any help is appreciated!!

It's opposite (above) the oil filter.

I'd reset the code and see if it clears. You could have a loose/wet connection. Check the connector. Unplug it and replug it. If you have a multimeter, check across the connectors (solenoid side) for 14-30 ohms. If not in that range, the solenoid is bad. You can also remove the solenoid and press on it. It should move. If it doesn't, it's bad.

It's also possible (but probably not likely) that the solenoid filter is blocked. To get to the filter, you have to remove the whole oil filter attachment assembly (2 or 3 bolts I think) and replace the solenoid filter, oil filter and engine oil.

thanks for the great info! Exactly what I needed. Do have a question though.

How in the heck are you supposed to get this thing out of there? Definitely a part of the car I haven't spent too much time with because everything is super tight around that area.

Take a look at this picture please. See that green/white snipped wire. If I'm reading the diagram right, that's definitely my problem. It must have been a stick or something on that road that I was on that swung up and sliced right through it.

Stinks that it's so close to the solenoid. Probably can't splice it that close. Think I can get just that wire from Acura or do I have to replace the whole thing? Not sure how its connected within/under that solenoid housing.

Thanks!
