getting ridiculous fuel economy at the moment (good)
Hey all,
I dunno what's happened but since cleaning my egr ports, replacing spark plugs and seafoaming im getting some truly remarkable gas mileage.
I filled to the brim and im currently about a quarter tank left with 314 miles traveled.
That's about 100 miles per 3 gallons! 33mpg...
Hopefully this isn't a one time fluke because I could get used to this. And I haven't really changed my driving style, highway main but a good bit of city (I work downtown)
Everyone always shares their grief, thought id throw in some awesome.

cool! I only get ~17m/g on my 02 tl-s. I am attempted to do these things as well. Questions though:
1. Is it difficult to clean egr ports?
2. I heard horrible stories about seafoaming? Is it too risky to do that for a high mileage car (~125k miles)

You know, fuel gauges aren't really linear usually. You should measure it by recording your miles at fill up. That said, 33 is what I get on the highway when I measure the MPG correctly. I've always chalked it up to the pulleys because I don't think any of my other mods would really help. Also I get that 33 at 75MPH. I've always been amazed that I beat the manufacturer's fuel economy rating by 4MPG at such a high speed. Oh and I have a Type-S.

41MPG is probably more like 600 per tank. I'm getting just over 500 per tank at 33MPG. It's a huge (I think 17.1) gallon tank. And 41 is insane. I don't even see how it would be possible just due to aerodynamics and everything.

yeah, I'll take note of the mileage next fill up.
I had been averaging 20 so to get 12/13 more per gallon is welcome.
and I have 200+k as you can tell by the photo. the seafoaming is painless and simple and pretty quick. I did both (gas can and vacuumed through intake)
EGR ports don't take very long to clean either, just a wirebrush and degrease

Ya to do the mileage, just reset the trip odometer when you get gas. Then next fill up you can divide the miles by the gallons. You'll find that when you do it right it's way more accurate than trying to read the gauge.

UPDATE:
I just got more gas, tank empty, filled 12 gallons into full, went 389.6 miles = 32.5 miles. I'll take that!

i always average around 30mpg highway cruising at 80mph on the highway. and i have never done seafoam or anything still on original spark plugs too lol. its the city mileage and premium gas that's killing me ~18mpg. i also use scangauge 2 and it reports sometimes instant mpg of 35-37 when cruising at 65mph.

Yeah our cars are hyper efficient on the highway, absolute garbage in the city. It's really sad. If I only did city, I spec that I'd probably only get 14-15 mpg
Oh and I NEVER use AC, seriously turning the AC on is like letting my car binge on gas. Full tank went 180 miles highway cruising from Albany to NYC ~75 + AC
Same ride back up? ~75 back windows open 312miles

My '03 TL would get 33 mpg without trying on the freeway
And I measured gallons pumped vs. odometer.

On the highway yes, you want to reduce drag as much as possible.

^agree but we take what we get right?
I'm personally ok with anything over 20mpg, I've never owned a car that consistently got better gas mileage than that so I won't complain

It was a wheel speed sensor, pulled it when I lowered my car

try an ecu reset by clock fuse removal method for abs light--might work
mileage differs on direction of trip? the country is not flat! more uphill going home?
ac on is the rule here!- I didnt buy the TL to go slow and sweat--its got better ac than the house!! and sometimes gets used as a temporary human cooling unit--
a run down the freeway to cool myself off!!
sidenote on ac use-from the book (especially helpful to hot area ziners)
start car, open rear windows- turn ac to manual- recirc OFF
fan on 5,start driving--once you get to ~45mph the low pressure/vacuum effect created by open rear windows will suck hot air out the rear windows and pull colder air thru the cabin from the ac vents
Once its cooled down from 100 inside the cabin- set ac as desired, close windows and sunroof- enjoy
Its smart to switch from recirc to fresh sometimes = to maintain moisture and fresh air input for you to breathe
Note for noobs to seafoam - that first treatment did great!! now repeat vac and gas--or twice thru gas- after a month or 2, then good for a year
Remember to clean the TB air plate!!!! affects idle and airflow into engine- it gets coated with oily crud from PCV system

After doing a through/squeaky clean TB air plate and bore cleaning, I still get an occasional sticky gas pedal. My thought process is that the pivotal points of the air plate are sticking for whatever reason. Is there a way to apply lube these points, or the whole inside bore for that matter?

yea I noticed that last couple days that my mileage kinda starts to drop around < 80MPH
and the speed that mythbusters tested for A/C use was 60MPH, below that you should open your windows.
Anyone else open certain windows a certain amount to get max airflow?
like for EX: I never have one window open I open the front driver one a bit more than half, tilt the sun roof, and have the opposite rear window open all the way. works wonders.
