Nate's quad headlight build

How's everyone doing? This thread is going to be dedicated to my quad headlight build. Currently I have a quad set up built by Rich at HID Illusionz with Morimoto Mini H1 projectors. After having this set up for a few months, I decided I wanted to go with an OEM projectors so I will have the abilities to use OEM bulbs and I've also always wanted S2K projectors. For the H1's, I have to use aftermarket H1 bulbs for these to work and are hard to color match to OEM bulbs.

After talking to JnC to see if these projectors would even fit I decided to give them a go. These projectors are going to have to be cut to the bar minimum to even be feasible.

Here's a list of what's going to happen with this build.
  • S2K ap1 projectors with OEM e30 clear lenses (possible custom shields)
  • OEM TL projectors with ZKW-r clear lenses (I'm not sure yet if I'm staying with the Slope shield or going with the step shield yet)
  • 2 pairs of Osram 66240 CBI's
  • Morimoto 3five ballasts
  • White shield painting
  • WDP and NBP housing painting
  • Type S clear diffusers
This project is going to be very slow moving because I work full time and also a full time college student, but I will have this done in time for late spring early summer.

Moving on to the pictures:

some of you have seen the idea I found from HIDplanet for the shield painting.

These were made from a coke can with the aluminum painted red along with the projectors shield painted red. As stated above, I will be going with the white to match the car.

I will update this thread as often as possible with my progress over the months. I should be taking the headlights apart tonight and to finalize my ideas of painting the housing and get them sent to the body shop for accurate color matching. Stay tuned! updates will be coming soon. Thanks for looking everyone.

-Nate

Mother of God....and by God I mean Nate. Can't wait to see this. I know others have tried the quad-projector setup, but it looks like this is going go above and beyond all others.

White is a good choice for the colored shields---I was thinking white, black or gunmetal myself!

And AP1 projectors, eh? Baller! I was waiting for the S2K-R but just ended up with Mini H1s and D2S.

Can't wait to see your finished product!

No timeline as far as what I want done at certain times I'll be happy if I get these done before summer starts. Before I do anything I have to order ballasts from Matt so I can start lens alterations on the TL/ZKW-r and the S2K/e30. I also need to get bulb spacers for the S2K/e30 because in this case, the bulb needs to be spaced as opposed to the lenses that will center the hot spot of the output.

I'm excited to get things started. Not sure of what I'm going to paint which color, possibly thinking of hydro dripping some parts, but we will see.

Thank you. Getting anxious to get the ball rolling with this project.

I couldn't wait for the S2K-r anymore. They are now thinking of going with a Bi-xenon version which turned me off even more. The white shields should give the projectors that POP feature when you look at the front end.
I was going to integrate some angel eyes or LED's somehow, but with the large fail rate of anything aesthetically I figured I'd stay away from the part. I only want to open these up once and be done!

I recall you were waiting for them too! I haven't updated myself with the progress of the S2K-R [took too long]. Bi-Xenons though... not sure what to think about it. Sounds convenient though. There's always the option of removing the solenoid.

White shields definitely look good.
In my case, I was planning to have the TL Bi-Xenons as white... but it might be too much since my quads would have yellow lens.

What do you think of TRS XB angel eyes? They seem to be very good quality! Not feeling the green-tint it has though.

The XB's are nice, but I don't like the yellow when they aren't lit. I don't want that to be the focus point of the headlights. Like I said. I don't want something that will work for a couple months then die on my then have to open them for replacements.

Totally feel you on all points.
The yellow/green is definitely a turn off too.

Nonetheless, have you cracked open the headlights yet? =o

Update

Here's tonight's update. I got all three of the headlights open. I bought a DEPO Type-S headlight for the clear diffuser.

Headlight ready for the oven 210 degrees F for 15 minutes and the lenses peeled off nicely.

I will have somemajor cutting to do to the DRL spot and to the S2K projectors, as you can see it is going to be a tight fit.

I've always wondered what the DEPO light looked like. I purchased this light brand new and I was suprised to see how mad the chrome look like in the projector. These lights are very cheaply made IMO, you get what you pay for lol.

No ball joints for the turn signal area. To get the projector/DRL mount out of the housing was nearly impossibe without breaking the white pivot points.

This is what the projector bowls look like.

remember these headlights were brand new.

That was all I was able to get done tonight. The parts will be going to the body shop next week for color matching paint and hopefully get my ballasts so I can get the lenses tweaked and ready to start getting the S2K mounted!

Thanks for looking guys/gals.

Good luck, Nate .

BTW, I'd advise on keeping the OEM S2k lenses in there rather than the TSX-R ones.

The frosted ring around the S2k lenses makes it possible to have the thick intensity right at the cut off which in turns means the road lights up better in front of you and to the sides.

The TSX-R lenses make the cut off crispier but you dont get the extra intensity at the cut off.

Thanks JnC. I found a pair of the e30 clear lenses. I'm going to give them a shot and compare to the oem S2K. I'm looking more for the color factor than extreme sharpness. I was reading that adding an addition spacer to the S2K lenses will give a little more color.
This is with the e30 lenses on

I was using JVX's comparisons as a reference.

Small update. Headlight internals are heading over to the paint shop today. Color Matched WDP and NBP for the headlights. Tonight I will be cuting the S2K projectors down and painting the shields. Ordered the ballasts and bulb spacers today. I should start fitting the S2K into the DRL location by this weekend hopefullt. That's when the fun starts

If anyone wants specific pics of the headlight internals for some reason or just curious of how some parts work and or look, please let me know. I'd be more than happy to get some detailed pics for you.

Thanks. These things are A LOT bigger than I thought they'd be.
I had to scrap the white pop can insert cause there is much room in either projector for them to reflect enough to be useful. I still painted the cut off shield white though. My painted parts will be ready for pick up Monday. I have one TL/Zkw projector tuned nicely. Having trouble with the other one.

The test fitting of the s2k projectors are still in the works. I have spare drl bezels I'm playing around with before I finalize the measurements for cutting for the ones that are going on my car. There isn't much of the drl bezel left!

No plans for the projectors besides clear lenses and painting. Don't want to do demon eyes navies of the fail rate on the LED same for the angel eyes. I don't feel like opening the up after everything is finished.
I picked up the painted parts from the body shop this morning. I will get updated pics posted tonight for you guys.

Update 1/28/13

Here is my update as far as today. I haven't made much progress because it's been -20 here for the last week and don't want to be outside very long doing my lens adjustments lol.

Here's the new shields for the TL and S2000

Here's a pic of the TL Shields

Here's the new paint job of the headlights, some are going to like and some aren't, but in person the pop. Everything is Acura colors WDP and NBP let me know your honest opinions.

These projectors are a little bit bigger than I thought. I'm still able to trim them down a little but more, but I still need material I can JB weld to. The DRL reflector is pretty much all taken out.

Don'w worry about the chunk missing out of the DRL reflector, these are spares I had laying around. I'm not making any cuts to my headlights untill I have everything figured out beforehand.

Forgot to add some color porn.

Also here's a cutoff pic. Not sure of the distance, but I know it's 30+ feet

awesome work so far! I'm not really feeling the wdp painted bits, I'm more for subtlety but, if you dig the look that's the most important thing. I think your work speaks for itself, great looking color and cutoff in the lights!

We all can learn from this thread. Im looking forward to the end results.
