Rare Type-S with only 4,900 miles!

Found this on my local craigslist. Rare color, rare 6-speed, and only 4,900 miles!

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/3833453211.html

Asking 25k which isnt necessarily a bad price for a practically new car. Id be worried a little though because it hasnt hardly been driven; only 700-800 miles a year. It could have been sitting for a while.

What's up with that window sticker? It reads "NOT FOR SALE H.M. CD CAR" where the total MSRP would normally be.

Nice eye. I have no clue what that would mean. A quick google search didn't tell me anything either. Hmmm. Other members?

^it's CO.

Company Car.

Car probably sat fairly often on a showroom floor and/or was a company car that was never used.

I would love to work for that company!

Am I correct in saying that most company cars are not manuals? Unless you work for Car and Driver...

True Story - I have driven 4900 miles in ONE MONTH.

Personally I know we all salivate over a low mileage car but that car is 6 years old. How long has it just sat there? Hell....when my car sits for more than a week it feels different. Cars are made to be driven.

Of course they're made to be driven from a functional standpoint, but age and mileage together is what exponentially wears a vehicle out. But if this car was sitting in a clean, rodent free, heated storage area and the oil was changed at least once a year, it's still going to be better than a six year old car with average miles. Interior probably shows no wear on the seats, no dash fade, paint is likely perfect, suspension's likely still new car tight, no rattles etc. Probably could use a new set of tires. This car should sell fast. I'd be interested if it was a different color.

^^^ I agree. I always see incredibly low mileage Corvettes that just make your mind boggle at how someone could buy the car and literally just park it. Its not uncommon to see C5 Z06 vettes(2001-2004) with mileage in the hundreds!! So like anx said above, as long as the car was taken care of properly then that low mileage should be no issue. The lowest mileage car I remember seeing recently was on ebay a 1990 Thunderbird SuperCoupe with 75 miles. Owner said it was taken to one car show in 1990 and then parked. F'ing ridiculous lol.

I don't disagree that if a car is properly stored that it will be in great shape. And I am not implying that this car was not properly cared for. I just think with this little miles it is impossible for anyone to know if the car was driven 4900 miles in the first 3 months and has been sitting under a tarp for the past 6 years with no changes to fluids etc.

It's got a New Hampshire phone number with Connecticut plates and it's in Atlanta. Something sounds fishy there is a lot more to this story I'm sure.

As someone who daily drives an S2000, I just don't see how people can leave something in a garage and not use it.

To me, the NSX I saw with over 200,000 miles on it was to be respected. Just imagine how much fun that owner had.

if someone is really interested then should able to pull the history off carfax or autocheck using the plate number and contact the current owner about the sale but if everything coming back empty then some one here trying to scam.

I dont see why everyone sees this as such a good deal. It is somewhat over priced for the market. Your getting exactly what you are paying for. I agree the mileage is awesome but you not getting a steal thats for sure.

Sounds decent to me. Where else will you ever find a 5,000 mile 6mt TL-S? If this car was at a dealership I promise you the price would be high 20's. I agree its not an absolute steal, but he has the car fairly priced for what your getting for sure. Thats if the car is as good as you would think it would be for 5,000 miles.

I have details about this car if anyone wants to know more before actually contacting the owner.
IMO there is good and bad with this car.

The good is that it is a legit sale and a Type S with only 4,900 miles. Whats also good is that this owner seems to be very honest and is not giving any BS stories about the car or its history.
The car is all original with no collision or repaint work. This is the HPT version and has original Potenza tires on flawless wheels. He said the front end is basically rock chip free, but IMO thats to be expected with a car with only 4,900 miles. The reason the car is being sold in Atlanta, but has CT plates, and the owner has a NH phone number was all explained to me and is all legit. He works for Honda Corporate and used to live in Atlanta where he still owns a home which is where the Type S stays. He lived in CT for a year and he registered it there for whatever reasons. Lastly, he is currently living in NH for work.
As some people mentioned above this was a vehicle kept by Honda Corporate in the Part and Service offices in order to answer technical questions if needed. He says they do this with every model vehicle. Then they are offered for sale to employees when no longer needed. So he is the original consumer owner, however the vehicle did spend most of its life with Honda Corporate.

So that now leads me to the not so good. I am in no way saying this is a bad car for anyone on this forum that may be interested, but im just giving the info as it was explained to me. If I were in the market for the lowest mileage Type S I would still absolutely pursue this one, but with the understanding that it will need a little work to make it perfect.

Since this vehicle was kept by Honda Corporate parts and service offices some parts may or may have not been taken apart and put back together. The owner says these cars are usually only used to diagnose minor issues so easy things like door panels and such may have been removed, but large components are never messed with such as engine or tranny etc etc. So he did disclose that this vehicle may have had stuff removed and put back together, but he said since the Type S was built in such limited numbers compared to Honda Civics, and Accords, or even base TLs that it was most likely left alone most of the time.
Unfortunately, one would think that a car with only 4,900 miles would be perfect. This one does have some blemishes that he did clearly disclose and send pictures of. Unfortunately some of the issues arent as easy as buffing out and would require a professional to repair. The worst being a dent and scratch/goudge that goes from the drivers side trunk and into the rear quarter panel. If I had to describe it I would say a rake fell onto the car in the garage and got the trunk and quarter then left a dent above the fuel filler door as well. The scratches are deep, but have been touched up. The dent is small, and appears a paintless dent repair man would have no problems fixing that dent. As for the scratches, I dont know how they repair those, but I would hate to see a basically brand new car get repainted panels so if they can do scratch repairs without painting the entire panels that would be awesome. The drivers side lower side skirt has a lot of scuffs, so its pretty clear people went in and out of that car often and didnt care if their shows banged on the panel. The good thing is it appears to be all scuffs so that should be repairable without repaint work. There is another paint scratch/goudge on the bottom of the drivers door. Best way to describe that is like the door was opened and hit something solid. DOes not appear to be dented. Even though it did not look bad in the pics, he claimed the drivers side seat bolster is showing wear. The left console aluminim trim panel that runs the length of the console and up dash is scratched and dented. I can only imagine its from that piece being removed and reinstalled many times and the person doing it didnt care to be careful with it. Good thing is thats a simple swap to fix that. The rest of the interior appears to be mint in the pictures.
So with that said the car still looks great, but understand if your expecting a 100% showroom car this one is not that car. With some work it has the potential to be a very clean. As for price he did say he is getting a lot of interest and he wants to remain somewhat firm, but is open to reasonable offers. He still has a balance on the loan through Honda Financial or something like that.

Hope this info helps for anyone interested or who were just curious about the car in general.
James
